AMSTERDAM
Dear Mies and Toon,
You have not heard from me for a quite a little while, but now that things are progressing so well, I shall once again show signs of life.
Turkey, Roumania, and Bulgaria, are all in the hands of the allies; now that things are moving so fast, perhpas the war will be over before the winter. Obviously we will be occupied by the English and the Americans for a few weeks, to maintain law and order, after which it is said we will have a government consisting of about 40 people, young and bright, who will remain in power about one year, and then it will be decided whether we have a monarchy (the queen or Juliana) or a Republic.
What a tremedous vistory in France. And we heard that the German prisoners of war and the Dutch N.S.B. (Nazis) prisoners, were transported to England. The N.S.B. prisoners apparently appealed to our Queen for a pardon, but unsuccessfully. They were all shot. Bravo!
It is the same here as it is in Germany. All those aged 17 - 50 years have been called up, both men and women. They have to temporarily take over the posts of those who are at the war. Families are not allowed to work for themselves any more, or run family businesses under threat of severe punishment. Doctors and Priests, don't sleep in their own homes any more at night, for fear of being picked up; each night they seek a different roof. What a nerve wrecking experience. Even our own priest sleeps in a different room every night so that they will not find him.
But how are you all? I am still enjoying the sardines. I gave one of the tins to Tanta Anna, because it was such a big treat, and it helps keep up one's spirits. Every day I think of you, and wonder if we will ever see each other again. I have great faith, and after every meal each day, I pray "Dear Jesus, spare my children, their children and their families. Oh! Mary, through the Sacred Heart of Jesus Christ, show us that mercy for which I beseech and pray so earnestly, " and I know my prayers will be heard.
September 4th
Early this morning someone came to tell me the great news that the end of the war is very near, according to a speech made by Eisenhower yesterday evening. The underground army has been told to hold itself in readiness for action. Prins Bernhardt apparently stands at its head. Also the people have been told to quietly refuse to do what the Germans want. Not to demonstrate, but simply not to co-operate.
Next Wednesday September 6th, the German women have to leave for Germany, the men must remain here, and go to the front. The German soldiers are also leaving, and they are taking everything they can with them, amongst others:- horses, cows, sheep, and also furniture, even sideboards etc. I am very curious as to what is going to happen next.
God hear our prayers.
Good by Mies and Toon, and dear children.
Love and Kisses
from your loving Mother.
